Neuromuscular based Horse Dentist

Neuromuscular Horse Dentistry

works towards balancing the incisors and molars to the temporomandibular joint(TMJ) to create equilibrium. This is done by optimizing and stabilizing the movement of the TMJ through adjustments on the length and angle of the incisors together with adjustments on the inclination of the molars. The inclination of the molars works like a frame for the movement of the TMJ. If the incisors becomes too long this frame will loose it’s function due to lack of occlusion. Hereby the stability of the TMJ is lost. This creates eating and digestion issues for the horse. By maintaining the incisors height we prevent pressure to build and diseases like EORTH to develop.

If the molars inclination is changed through lack of correct wear or by professionals due to lack of understanding the inclination of the molar tables the TMJ’s position and movement will change and cause unnecessary damage to the joint. The chewing pattern of the horse is changed from small uneven oval 8-figures to a more vertical chewing pattern. When this happens we typically see tense and/or overdeveloped temporalis muscles and tense/sensitive TMJ’s. These problems travel further down the horses body through compensation patterns and creates issues in the body.

Cecilie Bandersen N.B.D

is a certified Neuromuscular Based Horse Dentist through the Center of Neuromuscular based horse dentistry(NBD) by Spencer Laflure in the United States. Cecilie travels through Denmark, Germany and Austria working as a horse dentist.

Cecilie is known for her work with low stress techniques to ensure a stress free calm environment during the treatments.

”Working as a Neuromuscular horse dentist, is about achieving and maintaining the anatomical correct balance for the individual horse, adjusting both incisors and molars. I work to promote the proper bite alignment and chewing patterns allowing for healthy function of the horses’ body. By doing this we prevent pathology like tooth fractures, hooks, caries, ATR, waves and more to develop. The horse’s owner can do a lot of environmental changes themself to help their horse maintain their dental balance and health in between the dental treatments. Cecilie is ready to guide the owner.”

Cecilie is every second year returning to the Center of Neuromuscular based horse dentistry to further educate and re-certify. Cecilie is carrying the updated certification card given by the school, you can always ask to see it.

Practical information

The dental treatment is done with a light sedation to ensure a relaxed horse and a safe working environment for both the horse and the dentist.

The dental treatment is done with the horses head in a natural position to protect the atlanto-occipital joint. I use a mouth speculum to perform careful, precise and safe dentistry. I give breaks closing the speculum frequently during the treatment to not overload the TMJ. I work with small ergonomical manual hand floats designed by Spencer Laflure and manufactured at Capps in the US for careful corrections of the teeth, allowing me to work one tooth at a time. I have learned precise safe floating techniques enabling me to work with the speculum opened only 7cm.

During the treatment the horses neck, hyoid, TMJ and other facial structures are palpated and evaluated. Both incisors (the horses front teeth) and molars (the horses cheek teeth) are evaluated with light/mirror, palpated and adjusted during a treatment.

All details from the treatments are put into the horses journal which you the owner receives after the treatment.

I work with low stress techniques to ensure the best experience for your horse.

In Denmark I work with Vequna Denmark a horse clinic in Jutland. Here we have a dentalscope/camera available and x-ray for further diagnostics when needed. For booking contact Vequna Denmark: www.vequna.dk

In other parts of Denmark a local vet needs to be organized by the owner for sedation. If x-rays, further diagnostics tools or tooth extractions are needed we will cooperate with your local vet / horse clinic.

In Germany/Austria you can either organize your local vet to come and sedate for us or ask your vet for a sedation gel. You can read more about this in the information sheets send to any inquires.
